Natural Daylight Photodynamic Therapy

Natural daylight photodynamic therapy ( ND-PDT) is a simple, non-invasive procedure which is used to treat pre-cancerous lesions as well as superficial BCC’s.

A prescription cream called Metvix is applied to the affected skin by an RN. Approximately two hours are then spent outdoors in daylight which allows the cream to be activated. The temperature outside must be 10 degrees Celsius or higher and it must not be raining or else the treatment will not be effective. The abnormal cells in the skin are destroyed in the process but does not affect healthy tissue.

There is little time spent in the clinic and the treatment is almost painless.

The most common skin reactions include redness, scaling, swelling and crusting of the skin. This usually peaks by day 2-3 and resolves by the end of two weeks.

Some may need a second treatment three months later to clear any residual lesions.

This is a great alternative treatment for treating larger areas of sun damage and it helps to decrease the occurrence of skin cancer. Ask us if this treatment is right for you!
