Dr. Karen Edstrom, Aesthetic Dermatologist, shares her advice for radiant summer skin.
While we look forward to the mercury rising all winter long, Ontario summers can be hard on our skin. Which is why, as a centre for advanced dermatology, we feel it’s important to share some tips and tricks so our Dundas, Hamilton, Burlington, Ancaster, Flamborough, Brantford and Waterdown patients can beat the heat and enjoy a flawless complexion. Our Aesthetic Dermatologist Dr. Karen Edstrom shares her expert advice with you here.
Prevent, Protect & Correct.
If you make this your skincare mantra, you are on the right track! With a heightened degree of sun exposure, our skin is much more vulnerable to photodamage in the summer months. Thus, preventing, protecting and correcting this damage is our number one priority.
What is sun damage?
Repeat, long-term exposure to ultraviolet light and artificial UV light causes damage to the skin cells. When this damage is minimal, as in our youth, the skin can repair many of the mutations that are caused by exposure to UV. Over many years, this damage builds and the skin is unable to properly repair itself. Consequently, the affected skin cells die off or mutations occur when the cells are not repaired perfectly. This results in the visible signs of aging—90 percent of which are caused by sun exposure–and to the formation of pre-cancerous and cancerous skin lesions.
What you can do at home to avoid and repair sun damage.
Daily topical antioxidant.
Integrating a topical antioxidant that is formulated with high concentrations of active and stable ingredients like vitamin C and resveratrol can do wonders to reduce damage from UV light. Other benefits include a brighter and more even complexion and firmer skin.

Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen–and don’t forget to reapply!
I recommend my patients wear a high quality broad spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30–SPF 50 is ideal–every day, rain or shine. Reapplying your sunscreen every 2 hours is a must! I also recommend covering your ears, the back of your neck, hairline, the scalp and spots like your toes. These areas are often forgotten. Wearing protective clothing such as a hat and sunglasses is also helpful. You may not see the benefits now, but you will be rewarded for your SPF diligence with youthful looking skin for years to come!
Two of my favourite sunscreens for the summer are SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50 for its weightless finish, and SkinCeuticals Physical Eye UV Defense SPF 50 which is a sting-free way to protect the entire eye area–including the eyelid.
How to prevent an acne flare-up.
Acne is a common concern that arises in the summer time. The skin texture becomes rough or bumpy when the pores get clogged with sebum (the skin’s natural moisturizer) and dead skin cells that can lead to development of papules, pustules, blackheads and comedones.
Learn about acne treatment options here.
In addition to following a prescribed acne treatment plan, the perfect at-home antidote is a mask. In this case, multi-masking with the SkinCeuticals Clarifying Clay Mask, which uses natural earth clays and a hydroxy acid blend to keep the pores clear and toned, and the Phyto Corrective Mask to intensively soothe and replenish the skin’s moisture will keep your skin balanced all summer.
