Acne | Blemishes

Frequent skin imperfections can cause significant emotional distress at any age. At Cutis, we effectively manage active acne and subsequent scarring by integrating medical dermatology, aesthetic procedures, and professional skincare to nurture clear and healthy skin.

  • A skin disorder characterised by excess sebum (oil) production, comedones (blackheads and whiteheads ), pustules, papules, nodules, and cysts. Commonly affects the back and chest, the t-zone of the face and, with adults in particular, the chin, cheeks and jawline.

  • In adolescence, acne can occur due to a surge of hormones through puberty - specifically testosterone. Testosterone causes the skin's sebum (oil) secretions to have a stickier quality, leading to congested skin follicles as skin cells fail to shed away and become, essentially, stuck. Bacteria trapped within the follicle cause the appearance of acne. In adulthood, acne can be associated with excessive stress and hormonal fluctuations.

  • Cutis provides a variety of acne and acne scarring solutions which include chemical peels, BBL, cyst excision, subcision and Sculptra® injections, and medication.

Age Spots

Time spent outdoors can lead to uneven and undesirable skin tone.

  • Brown spots, also known as age spots, start off as faint shadows or freckling and develop and multiply into darker lesions. As spots emerge and converge, a blotchy complexion surfaces.

  • Age spots accumulate due to sun exposure. Our skin produces melanin (pigment) as protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Through prolonged sun exposure, our skin sustains damage and the process of normal melanin production breaks down. Brown spots begin to surface and cause us to appear older than we feel.

  • Halo laser is the most effective option. Other options include IPL, Moxi and Nano and Micro Laser Peel, chemical peels, and advanced skincare which can all be tailored to help address brown spots and sun damage. Beyond lightening and lifting age spots, these procedures provide other benefits to the skin such as improved skin texture, the stimulation of collagen production and refinement of pore size, leaving you with a more even, luminous and vibrant complexion.

A series of treatments may be required for optimal results. Enjoying the outdoors is a healthy part of life and therefore, annual maintenance sessions may be recommended to protect and enhance your results. Schedule a professional consultation or treatment today to address age spots and reveal your best skin.

Brows

Over time, our facial expressions cause deep wrinkles such as frown lines between the brows which can misrepresent us, making us appear tired, unhappy, or stressed. Brows may furrow or appear asymmetrical due to sun damage, trauma, or innate skin changes, altering the aesthetic and natural beauty of the face.

  • A furrowed or drooping brow resonates with fatigue or stress around the eyes that may not reflect how we feel on the inside. Likewise, unwanted eyebrow asymmetry may reflect an unfavourable aesthetic.

  • Accumulated time, sun damage, repeated expressions, trauma, stress and lifestyle may all contribute to noticeable brow aging and changes. As supportive networks of collagen and elastin fibres lose resilience from the above factors, the brows may lose their youthful arch, deep wrinkles may set in and, in some cases, sagging eyelids may interfere with eyesight.

  • Depending on the unique condition of the brows and individual objectives, there are both surgical and non-surgical solutions to address brow concerns.

Cheeks

Aging causes your cheeks to begin to hollow, leaving you looking less youthful.

  • When our cheeks are full, our face appears firmer and more youthful. Loss of dermal fat and a weakening of muscle and connective tissues can give our cheeks a sunken or drawn look, aging our appearance.

  • The aging process affects more than the upper and lower layers of the skin where our connective fibres and fatty tissues reside; aging degrades our facial muscles and bone structures too, contributing to the overall loss of volume and fullness of the face. Lifestyle factors and accumulated sun exposure can also speed up and enhance this process, along with weight gain or weight loss.

  • Cutis offers multiple solutions to firm the skin of the cheeks and rebuild natural facial volume. Cheek augmentation procedures include fat transfer, facial filler treatments, Sculptra® cheek fillers and skin tightening with Skin Tyte. Our goal is to restore a natural, more supple and lifted appearance to the cheeks, safely and effectively.

  • Fat Transfer

Eyes

The slightest of muscle movements around the eyes can communicate so much; it can be disheartening when the signs of aging around the eyes misrepresent how we feel. Baggy eyes and sagging eyelids can make us look tired and unrested even when we are feeling our best.

  • Persistently puffy eyes can evolve into baggy eyes and sagging eyelids which add years to our appearance and, in some cases, a droopy eyelid can interfere with eyesight.

  • Sun damage, family history, allergies, sleep deprivation, fluid retention due to excess salt in the diet, lifestyle factors, and hormonal fluctuations can contribute to the appearance of baggy eyes. As a result, in time, the delicate skin around the eyes begins to thin and the swelling simultaneously stretches the skin, leading to wrinkles and sagging of loose eye skin. The fat pads under the eye can also enlarge or descend while weakening musculature lets them hang as bags.

  • Depending on the condition of the skin, non-invasive dermal fillers can add volume to sunken eyes where neuromodulators such as BOTOX COSMETIC® treatments can be quite effective in minimizing crows' feet. Laser Skin Resurfacing is also very effective in reducing fine lines around the eyes. However, in some cases, eyelid surgery, known as blepharoplasty, may be recommended for optimal results. Eyelid surgery may be focused on the upper eyelid, underneath the eye or both. While it focuses on removing excess skin from the upper lids and bags under the eyes, blepharoplasty does not lift the brow or address crow's feet. SkinTyte may be beneficial for tightening eyelid skin. So many choices at Cutis. A blend of non-invasive procedures and surgery is ideal.

Fat

For those who find unwanted fat settling underneath their chin, there are both surgical and non-invasive solutions that provide satisfying results.

  • Excess fat under the chin can have a negative impact on self esteem and body image.

  • Lifestyle factors and genetics can make the ideal difficult to achieve. Exercising regularly, addressing lifestyle inadequacies, implementing dietary restrictions and balancing hormones can make a positive difference to overall health and weight but after all this, the question of how to reduce stubborn chin fat may still remain.

  • Cutis targets stubborn chin fat with surgical procedures such as Vaserlipo, Subdermal Helium Plasma Resurfacing and neck lifts.

Gummy Smile

Each smile is unique but for some, a smile may not be a completely comfortable and effortless gesture. In the case of a gummy smile – a smile exposing significant gumline – Cutis offers a simple, safe and temporary solution.

  • When smiling, the space between the upper lip and the top of the teeth can reveal excess gum tissue, making the teeth appear smaller and giving a displeasing smile.

  • The size of the teeth and gum overgrowth can lead to the appearance of a gummy smile. Thin upper lips and strong upper lip muscles can also enhance a gummy smile.

  • We offer neuromodulator solutions with BOTOX COSMETIC® treatments. A few carefully administered injections can control the movement of the upper lip, thus reducing the amount of gum line revealed when smiling. This non-invasive procedure poses little to no discomfort and recovery. This approach also offers an effective alternative to more costly and invasive gum surgery.

Jowls

The loss of firmness and tone along the jawline increases the signs of aging.

  • As gravity, genetics, and effects of the sun take hold and our skin loses its resilience and firmness, a once defined jawline can be compromised by dips and bulges. Typically, this change is the result of our degrading skin structures, fat, skin tissues and muscle descending and forming what we call ‘jowls.’

  • Jowls are caused when degrading collagen and elastin fibres fail to support the subdermal fat that helps support and create the youthful structures of our facial contours. This process happens over time due to both extrinsic factors (aging triggered by sun exposure and lifestyle choices) and intrinsic factors (aging determined by our genes).

  • Possible treatment approaches may include BBL SkinTyte, Facial Fat Transfer, face lift surgery and dermal fillers. Addressing loose skin and jowls with the appropriate techniques provides more youthful, resilient skin, which in turn renews and reinvigorates self image.

Lashes

Lashes are prized for adding dimension and beauty to our eyes and face. However, not every natural eyelash is created equal and the market for eyelash enhancements and extensions grows every day.

  • When lashes are sparse or short, our eyes appear smaller and the signs of aging are more noticeable. Eye lashes also protect our eyes from foreign debris, meaning hypotrichosis (inadequate lashes) can leave our eyes vulnerable to environmental irritation. Long, healthy lashes are as helpful as they are attractive.

  • The thickness and length of our lashes is determined by heredity but these qualities of our natural lashes can be improved. Inadequate care from harsh cosmetics and poor makeup removal habits can lead to thinning lashes. The aging process also plays a part as hair follicles die and eyelashes thin. In the case of sudden lash loss, it is advisable to consult a medical professional as there are drug interactions and diseases which can cause eyelash loss.

  • For those seeking improvement to the length, volume, and colour of their natural lashes, Latisse® is the answer. When applied to the upper lash line as instructed by a Cutis professional, daily use of Latisse® results in longer, thicker, and darker lashes within 16 weeks.

Lax Skin

Aging skin can feel like the ultimate betrayal. Cutis can help!

  • Skin laxity creates unwanted shadowing on our face and can make us look tired and old. Lax skin is a result of loss of facial volume, which contributes to hollowness of the eyes, temples, and cheeks, drooping brows and eyelids, deep folds extending from our nose to the corners of our mouth and sagging skin along and under the jawline. The body is no exception - loose skin on the tummy, arms and thighs can make us feel very self-conscious.

  • Such signs of aging are triggered by a combination of elements, some of which are beyond our control, such as genetic factors, while others can be controlled through lifestyle choices. For instance, sun exposure is known to cause 90% of the skin damage and symptoms we attribute to visible aging. As we age, our skull shrinks, subcutaneous fat dissipates and our skin thins - the skin has nowhere to go but down.

  • Tightening loose skin was once reserved only for the realm of cosmetic surgery, however advancements in non-invasive procedures have opened up a huge range of options to address lax skin. Neuromodulators such as BOTOX COSMETIC ® treatments, dermal fillers, facial fat transfer, Fraxel® re:pair laser skin resurfacing, skin tightening with BBL SkinTyte, and the latest technology using Helium Plasma Resurfacing and Cutis' minimally invasive face lift are among the recommended treatment solutions Cutis has at its disposal.

Lips

Our lips communicate thoughts, mood, and personality. With fullness, definition, symmetry being the goal, we can help.

  • The size and shape of our lips is determined at birth and, as with all facial features, the volume and smoothness of the lips can diminish with age. Wrinkles in the lips themselves, lines above the lips and marionette lines (lines appearing from the corners of the mouth extending towards the chin) are among these signs of lip aging.

  • While we cannot control our hereditary traits, there are lifestyle and environmental factors which affect the look of our lips as we age. Smoking can cause the formation of lip wrinkles and vertical lip lines while damage from sun exposure degrades the collagen and elastin fibres that give lips their soft, supple fullness.

  • The skin of the lips is more delicate than the rest of the face and, therefore, requires careful attention and expertise to keep it looking its best.

Melasma | Pregnancy Mask

Shadow-like patches of pigmentation, commonly known as pregnancy mask or melasma.

  • Melasma manifests as light to dark brown patches of pigment that may appear on the upper lip, along the cheek bones, forehead and chin. Initially, melasma may resemble a large area of freckling. It is affected by hormonal fluctuations and sun exposure.

  • Melasma is commonly triggered by a combination of estrogen and sun exposure. Pregnancy, birth control medications, hormone replacement therapy, photosensitizing medications and a family history of melisma can also be triggers. Most commonly, melasma is experienced by women.

  • Melasma is a lifelong condition. Treatment helps to manage and reduce visible symptoms of skin darkening. Sun avoidance, diligent use of sunscreen with an SPF > 50 throughout the year and applying medical grade skincare with ingredients focused on inhibiting melanin production, such as Discoloration Defence, are essential to managing melasma. Melasma must be treated with gentle, expert care and requires an approach which differs from photoaging related pigmentation.

Neck

If you find yourself favouring neck-covering styles and accessories, we’re happy to report, there is a better way to take your mind off your aging neck.

  • Commonly, the neck exhibits age in the form of irregular pigmentation, rough or leathery skin texture, loose skin, necklace lines and deep, banded neck wrinkles.

  • The neck often bears the brunt of environmental assaults. The natural aging process and damage from the sun leads to uneven skin tone, the degradation of supportive skin fibres and weakened muscles, all of which detract from smooth and taut neck contours.

  • Advancements in the fields of dermatology and facial cosmetic surgery have allowed for significant improvements to the appearance of the neck. At Cutis, we may combine BBL, SkinTyte, BBL photorejuvenation or fractional laser resurfacing with Halo or Moxi treatments, neck Vaserlipo, and dermal fillers, to softly reduce necklace lines and Cutis' own minimally invasive "Invisible lift" surgery to optimally treat the aging neck. Botox also may be implemented to relax the platysma bands that run vertically through the neck.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a common skin condition affecting hundreds of thousands of Canadians. Rosacea can present as persistent flushing or blushing in the cheeks, and/or with the occurrence of pimples. In progressed cases, rosacea can lead to a bulbous nose and prominent facial blood vessels.

  • Rosacea symptoms commonly manifest as flushing or dilated vessels on the cheeks, nose and chin. Red papules or pustules may be present. In some cases, rosacea can be uncomfortable causing sensations of heat or tenderness.

  • Rosacea is most common among fair skinned individuals. While the cause of rosacea is unknown, common triggers include genetic, environmental, dietary, vascular, and inflammatory factors.

  • However mild or progressed, Cutis offers effective strategies to manage and control rosacea and flushing.

Scars

Injuries to the skin or episodes of acne can leave permanent impressions on the skin. Acne, keloid and hypertrophic scars are common and generally undesirable. Scarring can stand out for all the wrong reasons, greatly impacting our self-esteem and confidence.

  • There are many classifications of scars. Acne scars can affect both skin tone and skin texture. They can appear as pitted, depressed, or lumpy and can be discolored from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Hypertrophic and keloid scars are flesh-tone or pinkish, and are raised or enlarged growths, which result from a wound to the skin. In particular, keloid scarring can result in disfiguring the skin and can cause discomfort and embarrassment.

  • Acne scars arise due to the skin’s natural wound healing response, whereby collagen is laid down along with pigmented cells at the site of infection. As for Keloid scars, it is not known why keloid scars develop in some people and not in others. It may be familial. They are more common on the chest and back and in some ethnic groups. Certain individuals are prone to keloid scars following even a minor injury to the skin.

  • However mild or progressed, Cutis offers effective strategies to manage and control rosacea and flushing.

Skin Growths

Freckles

While often cute, freckles can be related to the aging process and excessive sun exposure.

  • Freckles normally appear as a uniform tan or light brown spots over sun exposed skin. When freckling arises from photodamage, they detract from a clear and luminous complexion, adding years to our appearance and an irregularity to our complexion.

  • Freckles are caused by sun exposure often starting as a child. When damage from ultraviolet light occurs, one of its common manifestations is as an uneven distribution of melanin. Heavy, irregular deposits of pigment form tan or light brown spots on the skin which can look very similar to freckles but have a dangerous potential.

  • The formation of new freckles can be prevented by limiting sun exposure and wearing sunscreen daily. Partial to complete sun-related freckle removal can be achieved through various treatments.

Milia

It may look like a pimple but it doesn’t act like one. If you’ve encountered small, white, pearl-like bumps on your skin, they may be common skin lesions known as milia.

  • Milia do not form from a pore, which explains why they do not act like an ordinary blemish. They are formed by dead skin cells which have been trapped in a tight pocket-like formation just under the surface of the skin. It is common to find milia under the eyes, on the cheeks and forehead. Multiple milia can result in bumpy, uneven skin texture.

  • There is not an official cause for milia. Some individuals are predisposed to them, particularly when conditions like dermatitis or rosacea are also present. Milia are also loosely associated with sun damage and may occur in the aftermath of a skin abrasion. They may be associated with occlusive heavy creams, moisturizers, and makeups. Milia may arise spontaneously.potential.

  • For the many reasons milia may appear, regular exfoliation and non-occlusive skincare and makeup products can help to prevent their formation.

Moles

When moles become high-risk or irritating, we can treat them.

  • Moles may be flat or raised. Their colour can span a range from pink and flesh-tone to tan and dark brown due to a proliferation of pigment forming cells called melanocytes. While generally round or oval, moles can vary in both shape and size. These common skin lesions can be found anywhere on the body.

  • Moles that are present at birth or appear within the first few years of life are considered congenital. Others arise later in life sometimes from repeated sun exposure or a family history of moles. Changes in shape, border, colour, and size should be monitored and noted with your family physician.

  • To maintain skin health, we first recommend the use of daily sun protection with a SPF > 50. To effectively treat unwanted moles. In other instances, following an evaluation by our Dermatologist, surgical mole excision may be recommended.

Pore Size

Pore size is a leading factor of flawless complexions and of how we feel about our skin. Commonly, diminishing large pores is a skin care priority.

  • Enlarged pores may be accompanied by a bumpy skin texture and a dull complexion. Enlarged pores are synonymous with oily skin and blackheads, compromising the overall beauty of skin.

  • As we age, the rate of skin cell renewal and natural exfoliation slows down and pores become enlarged and congested. Furthermore, as collagen degrades and its production slows, the loss of skin volume and tone can cause pores to appear larger. These changes are due, primarily, to natural aging but can be enhanced by lifestyle choices such as smoking and sun tanning, which adversely affect these functions of the skin.

  • When our skin is at its best, pores are refined and our skin is smooth. Cutis will work with you to understand your objectives and design a treatment plan to fit your lifestyle.

Skin Tags

Aesthetically unpleasing and often uncomfortable and irritating.

  • Skin tags are defined as soft, harmless tissue that projects out from the skin’s surface. They are loosely formed collagen fibres and blood vessels. They are commonly found on the face, neck, underarms, and areas of skin chafing such as the groin. Skin tags can be flesh-coloured or darker and range in size from a few millimetres to five centimetres.

  • The cause of skin tags is unknown although they are common in areas of skin chafing and irritation. They may be familial.

  • Such skin lesions require specific courses of treatment and technology, safely directed by a specialized dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon.

Skin Texture

Smooth skin means luminous, vibrant skin. Perfect skin texture may be natural for a rare few, but maintenance is a reality for most.

  • Skin texture can be described as patchy, rough, flaky, and bumpy, especially in the case of photodamaged skin or oily t-zones. Uneven skin texture causes the skin to look dull and may be accompanied by enlarged pores.

  • Areas of the face where oil production is moderate to heavy can be prone to comedones (blackheads or whiteheads) which result from a build-up of dead skin cells and excess oil congesting skin follicles. The result is bumpy and irregular skin texture. Sun exposure can also affect skin texture when solar elastosis (raised yellowish bumps) arises. Overall photoaged skin can also have a papery or leathery quality.

  • Cutis is pleased to offer advanced solutions to improve skin texture.

Sun Damage

Sun damage and photoaging encompass most of the visible signs of aging.

  • Photoaging and sun damage result in discolouration, solar lesions such as actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions), fine lines and wrinkles, rough and thick skin texture, dilated blood vessels commonly known as "spider veins" and a loss of firmness and elasticity, often referred to as sagging skin.

  • Repeated, long-term exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun has damaging effects on the skin due to oxidation, ionization, genetic changes to cellular components including DNA and weakened skin immunity. In addition to the visible effects listed here, the aforementioned causes for photoaging can also lead to skin cancer.a papery or leathery quality.

  • The sun is our source of vitamin D which is essential to our growth, development and overall health. However, too much of a good thing can do more harm. Limiting sun exposure and using daily sun protection with an SPF > 50 are vital to preventing sun damage. Where sun damage exists, there are a host of treatment options to improve and correct the negative effects of the sun.

Sweating

Sweating is a natural process by which our body temperature is regulated but, when it causes embarrassment due to staining, sweaty palms or dampened clothing, excessive sweating can become a burden to our self-esteem and confidence.

  • Photoaging and sun damage result in discolouration, solar lesions such as actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions), fine lines and wrinkles, rough and thick skin texture, dilated blood vessels commonly known as "spider veins" and a loss of firmness and Excessive sweating is known as hyperhidrosis. It is generally localized to areas such as the armpits, palms, soles of the feet and face or scalp. Bouts of hyperhidrosis can be triggered by fear and anxiety, spicy food, exercise, hot weather and fever. Beyond the social stigma and distress that excessive sweating can cause, dermatitis can erupt due to chafing and frequent hand washing.

  • Excessive sweating is commonly caused by overactivity of the body’s temperature control centre of the brain (the hypothalamus) and the central nervous system’s control of sweat glands. Neurological and anxiety disorders have also been linked to hyperhidrosis.

  • The sun is our source of vitamin D which is essential to our growth, development and overall health. However, too much of a good thing can do more harm. Veins & Vessels

The circulatory system is constantly at work moving blood, oxygen and nutrients throughout our body. It is hidden away beneath the skin's surface until things go awry causing the unseen to become unsightly. Visible blood vessels, facial vessels, and leg veins incite us to use concealers and to banish revealing hemlines. In addition to aesthetic concerns, enlarged leg veins can be painful.

  • Leg veins can appear purple, dark blue, or green in hue and, when stressed, they are clearly visible beneath the skin. Telangiectasia, broken capillaries, facial vessels and spider veins are tiny, reddish and thread-like and occur individually or in patches throughout the body, but are more commonly found on the face and upper legs.

  • Excessive sweating is commonly caused by overactivity of the body’s temperature control centre of the brain (the hypothalamus) and the central nervous system’s control of sweat glands. Neurological and anxiety disorders have also been linked to hyperhidrosis. The cause of visible blood vessels and leg veins stem from blood flow abnormalities. These dysfunctional or incompetent vessels can become more obvious following pregnancy when pressure from increased blood volume and circulating hormones weakens vein walls, or when activities or occupations requiring sitting or standing for long periods put excess pressure against closed valves causing them to fail.

  • We can improve and remove spider veins and leg veins in a few different ways.

Wrinkles

Wrinkles can be effectively corrected and managed to reveal a refreshed and more youthful appearance, naturally.

  • Wrinkles are caused by various factors of the aging process. Deep wrinkles, such as crows feet, bunny lines, forehead lines, marionette lines and frown lines, appear around the points of facial expression from repeated dynamic movement. Fine lines form over the skin of the cheeks, forehead, neck and decollete as the skin’s integrity and structures degrade.

  • The leading wrinkle-causing culprit is the sun which deteriorates the supportive collagen and elastin networks of our skin. Sun exposure and lifestyle factors such as smoking can cause fine lines from dehydration and free radical damage. Dynamic lines from facial expression eventually become static or permanent through repeated movements.

  • Cutis offers many safe and effective treatment options for wrinkle reduction. Different types of skin wrinkles respond best to specific treatment methods
